New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland Celebrates National Rehabilitation Week
9/20/2015 - 9/25/2015
Nearly 70% of people in the United States will experience some type of rehabilitation in their lifetime. From September 20-25, New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland will be celebrating the contributions of disabled people and the positive impact of physical rehabilitation during National Rehabilitation Week. This year, our National Rehabilitation Week celebration is travelling the world of rehabilitation to provide our patients with a Passport to Independence. We have virtual visits to interesting destinations with fun events and activities planned for staff, patients, and the community. We are also starting the holidays early, with a toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots.
Our journey gets underway on Sunday, September 20th with a Community Health Fair at the Maine Mall from 11:00-1:00. We will have information about our programs, technology, and staff as well as Stroke and Brain Injury prevention and more. Stop by to enter a drawing to win a helmet and “Be smart, stay smart!”
Throughout National Rehabilitation Week, each day will highlight one of our programs, which have temporary international headquarters:
Monday, September 21st: visit Sydney, Australia with our brain injury team. From 4:00-6:00 in Café Brighton, we will be hosting a reception for our artists and crafters, and Carole Starr of Brain Injury Voices will demonstrate jewelry making.
Tuesday, September 22nd: visit Hong Kong with our hip fracture program. Our 3rd Annual Wheelchair Basketball Game will be held from 12:00-1:00 in the back parking lot with staff, former patients, and local celebs.
Wednesday, September 23rd: visit Barcelona, Spain, with our stroke team. Our inspirational Patient Awards Ceremony will run from 3:30-5:00 in Café Brighton, celebrating the achievements of our patients
Thursday, September 24th: travel to Nassau, Bahamas with our amputee program. Special guest Karen McWatters will share her story of being injured in the Boston Marathon bombings and fighting back to complete this year’s Beach to Beacon 10k. Our open house from 5:00-7:00 pm will showcase our programs to the community and our referral sources.
On Friday, September 25th, we are celebrating Christmas in North Pole, Alaska, with our outpatient program. Santa will pay us a visit, and it is the last day of our Toys for Tots drive.
