Good Shepherd WCSH
New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland’s Associate Medical Director Dr. Evan Savage appeared on WCSH 6’s Feed Maine segment on August 21st to discuss NERHP’s partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank through the Community Health and Hunger Program. During their stay, our patients are screened for food security and those who are identified as food insecure are provided a bag of healthy, shelf-stable food to get them through their first few days at home along with a list of community resources for the longer term.
People struggling with food insecurity are often facing health problems as well. Lack of adequate nutrition can worsen chronic health conditions such as Type II diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, and can prevent people from successfully managing their health. A hospital admission can be an opportunity to capture this information that often goes unreported, and to provide support that can prevent further deterioration of chronic health problems. In a year of working with this program, our team has reported positive outcomes with our patients.
Good Shepherd is working to end hunger in Maine, and NERHP is holding a fundraiser during National Rehab Week (September 16-22) to help feed our neighbors in need: $25 provides 100 meals, enough to feed one individual for more than a month. Our virtual food drive is online at www.gsfb.org/donate/vfd/996.
